Society Spotlight: Curieux
The University of Canberra has many interesting and exciting clubs, many of which we write about. This month, we want to introduce you to us, the people behind Curieux (cue-ri-oh) and therefore the people behind spreading the messages of UC’s students, clubs and societies!
Curieux is the UC Student magazine and we have been since UC started. We are an independent magazine published by the Student Representative Council, giving us total creative freedom in what we publish. And what we publish ranges from academic assignments to artworks or stories, all of which promote the voices of our students.
Our magazine itself is run by students of UC. We are made up of 2 co-editors and a designer and regularly have interns throughout the year. Our editors are Genevieve Barter and Jorja O’Brien.
Genevieve is a Bachelor of Creative Writing student in her third year at UC and she started with us in January 2026. She is extremely talented at editing and writing, with her unique and creative outlooks bringing a fresh edge to Curieux. I’d highly recommend you read some of her poetry on our website… Jorja is a Bachelor of Nursing student in her second year. She started with Curieux in July 2025 and is enthralled by academic work that captures different and wonderful perspectives. Geneiveve and Jorja work together to edit and publish everything that is submitted to Curieux. They are the main designers behind the themes for the magazines, coming up with the prompts, name and topics.
We also have the world's most invaluable designer, Rika Jammer. Rika is a second year Bachelor of Architecture student at UC. Rika started at Curieux in May 2025 and has been absolutely pivotal to our work. Despite each magazine being a clean slate, Rika meticulously designs each one to capture the voice of the theme while staying true to the overarching Curieux name. Her talent is found in every submission that comes through, as she designs the website, most social media posts and the entire magazine on her own.
Occasionally, we will have interns as well. So far this year we’ve had one editing intern and one design intern. The editing intern plays an important role in helping us stay on top of all the submissions that come through. The design intern works with Rika to make our vision come to life, with a large amount of responsibility and creative license.
Our magazine could not be published without the support of the SRC. The SRC not only fund us, but often give us exciting ideas for our themed magazines and even submit their work to us for publication. We are incredibly grateful for their consistent support and help with getting our name out there.
We currently have submissions open for our next themed magazine, After Eden, but you can also submit to our website at any time with any work of any medium and any genre etc.
Curieux often feels still underground, as if only those who are looking will find us. Our goal for the rest of the year is to have many more, if not all, of the students at UC know who we are and know that we work for you. We want to publish your work so that your opinions and voices educate others, and thus create a culturally and academically stimulating campus.
From,
Curieux
