UC Nursing Society (UCNS)
By Genevieve Barter
The University of Canberra’s Nursing Society (UCNS) was started as a way to create a space for student nurses to support each other and help one another out. It is important to the UCNS for students to have a way to network and build relationships before going out into the world to start their practice. The Club President, Sienna Flynn says what makes her proud is the incredible sense of community that has been built together. Their Starlit Hearts Ball, reflected what their community was like, it brought nursing students and the broader community together to celebrate, connect and support a bigger cause. UCNS was able to raise over $1,000 for the Starlight Foundation, through the generosity of their members and supporters. This demonstrates the passion the community has not only for nursing but also about giving back. Sienna says seeing students, professors, friends and loved ones, come together to make a meaningful impact while creating lasting memories was incredibly rewarding.
“For me, that's what UCNS is all about. It's more than organising events—it's about creating a community where students feel connected, supported, and inspired to make a difference. Knowing that we've fostered a culture of compassion, leadership, and service, while also contributing to the wider community, is something I'm immensely proud to have been a part of.”
Sienna says UCNS’ goal is to create a supportive and inclusive community where nursing students can feel welcomed, valued and empowered to succeed. “We aspire to be more than just a university club—we want UCNS to be a place where students can build lifelong friendships, grow professionally, and feel supported throughout every stage of their nursing journey.” The club says they want every student who joins UCNS to graduate as a confident future nurse and with a strong sense of belonging, leadership and pride in their profession.
Some past events that were successful were; the Occupational Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Practise Sessions provide students with hand-on opportunities to develop their clinical skills, build confidence, and prepare for practical assessments in a supportive peer-led environment. Transition to Practise events, where students in their final year can hear from experienced nurses and recent graduates about entering the workforce, how to navigate graduate programs, and making the shift from student to registered nurse. These sessions are an opportunity to offer valuable insights into what students can expect as they begin their professional careers. Throughout the year there are many Study Buddy events that help connect students from different year levels, this helps encourage peer mentoring, academic support, and collaboration. This helps foster a strong sense of community, which is UCNS’ ultimate goal.
UCNS is continuously growing their flagship initiatives such as their study sessions, ensuring students have ongoing access to academic support, mentorship, and career development opportunities throughout their degree. “Our goal is to keep building a welcoming and supportive community where every nursing student feels connected, empowered, and prepared for their future in healthcare.” UCNS has an upcoming Movie Night, that gives the students a chance to unwind, connect with peers, and take a well-deserved break from the demands of university life.
One final message to UC Students: “Our events are open to all students, as we're committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment that caters to a diverse range of interests and backgrounds. While everyone is encouraged to get involved, UCNS members enjoy exclusive benefits, including discounted event tickets, priority access to selected events, and other tailored member perks throughout the year.”
