A group of 11 University of Canberra journalism and media students have just returned from a three-day visit to some of Sydney’s top newsrooms.

The University of Canberra Press Club runs the trip annually, alternating between visiting news media organisations in Sydney and Melbourne. This year, off of the back of the success of the Melbourne industry trip in April, the club decided to run a second industry trip to Sydney to allow more students the opportunity to meet with journalists and witness first-hand how the news is produced.

After a day of socialising, the trip kicked off on Sunday night, the 19thof August, with a visit to Channel Ten’s The Sunday Project. As part of the live studio audience, the students were able to see how the show comes together for television broadcast, as well as meet some of their favourite journalists.

After the show, the students had the chance to meet journalist and television presenter Lisa Wilkinson, which was a highlight for UC student, Chantelle Pellegrini.

“She’s a great role model. She kind of was the main influence for me to take this path in life and try to get a job in the media industry. She’s really someone who has inspired me,” Chantelle said.

As well as being a great opportunity for students to meet with some of their favourite journalists, Chantelle noted that it was also a great opportunity to network with other journalism students.

“Trips like this are definitely a great way to make friends at university who are interested in a lot of the same things as you are and who have the same aspirations as you,” she said.

“It’s good to be able to make those important connections with other students and build each other up and help each other out.”

For first-year journalism student Anthony Brennan, the highlight of the trip was visiting news organisations such as the ABC and SBS News.

“Seeing their [SBS] newsrooms and speaking with people from all of the individual areas of news production was really cool,” Anthony said. “I would definitely recommend industry trips for students to go on.”

The University of Canberra Press Club will be running a Canberra industry trip later this semester for those who missed out on the trip to Sydney. Full details will be advertised on their Facebook page.
